Tea and Fluid Balance Research.

A healthy adult should aim to consume a daily intake of 35ml of fluid/kg bodyweight (63) which is equal to about 8-11 cups of fluid every day. Therefore, two-three cups of tea daily can significantly help contribute to the body’s hydration. It is a common myth, believed by both the public and some health professionals that because tea or any other caffeine-containing beverage is a source of caffeine, that the caffeine will cause a diuretic effect and loss of body fluid which will have a negative impact on the body’s hydration level. The scientific evidence does not support this belief (64). An extensive review of studies on the effects of caffeine and fluid balance made the following three conclusions: large quantities of caffeine have a diuretic effect; single servings of caffeine at levels found in a cup of tea have little or no effect; regular caffeine consumers bodies adapt to caffeine, diminishing its effects (67). In one recent study that looked at effects of including caffeine-containing drinks in the diets of people following their normal daily activities, no effect was found from caffeine on body’s hydration level (62). This finding appears to confirm the conclusions drawn from earlier studies.

*While tea is a naturally rich source of antioxidants, it is not a substitute for fruits or vegetables which provide a wide range of antioxidants and essential vitamins and minerals. Please consult your doctor regarding a diet/nutritional plan that is right for you.
